Municipal councillors passed draft framework for introduction of sickness funds in the capital

July 7, 2010. The members of the commission on health care and social protection generally agreed on the introduction of sickness funds in the capital. However, the mode of operation of sickness funds needs to be deeper studied in a comprehensive way. In particular, the chairman of the commission Ms Shlapak stated: It is yet too early to introduce sickness funds on city-wide scale. “In the beginning, their functionality has to be examined in a small localized environment, possibly on a pilot district to appropriately experience how to introduce this kind of health care provision in the whole area of the Kiev.” She mentioned that it would be easier to start with the introduction of a sickness fund based on a large enterprise, where trade unions are present, such as factories, educational institutions, or the Kiev subway. “Or even just to start the experiment with health care employees. In case of its successful implementation, physicians may give recommendation to their patients,” – added Ms. Shlapak.

Yesterday municipal councillors passed a draft framework for introducing sickness funds in the capital. Certainly, this document needs to get further professional enhancement in order to be approved by the Kiev city council.
